Sweet Basil

Sweet Basil
Is sweet basil harmful if my cat eats it?

No, probably not. Your cat might throw it up but that doesn’t really mean much. Buy your kitty some wheat-grass + catnip plants from PetSmart if you can. Those are approved for cats. Sweet Basil is probably fine though.

This is more than a cookbook about food. It's a snapshot of the experience of dining and working at Sweet Basil, in Needham, MA, with recipes and culinary tips mixed in. The food pays homage to some favored classics like Minestrone Soup, Spaghetti Bolognese, and Veal Marsala. Twisted by owner David Becker's cheerful efforts to defy convention, he also includes some offbeat flavor combinations, such as Pear and Turnip Empanadas, Beet Gnocchi with Amaretto Squash Sauce, and Banana Barbecue Sauce. In addition, Dave aims to demystify the cooking process, transforming the act of food preparation from a feared undertaking into something that can be really fun. Rather than promote rules, limitations, and parameters around which to prepare his recipes, Dave offers notes and hints for tweaking and playing with them. His approach is based on the premise of working with a well-stocked kitchen, full of homemade "staples," also the title of the last chapter of the book. He'll even tell you that most any flawed dish can be remedied with some good salt and freshly cracked pepper, and can "blow people away" with an act as simple as adding some candied nuts and caramelized onions. The food in the book reflects his preference for improvisation, and he encourages his readers to take their own risks and maker their own culinary discoveries. He'd even invite them to share their rendition with others.

Basil is a tender low-growing herb. Basil is a culinary herb prominently featured in Italian cuisine, and also plays a major role in the Southeast Asian cuisines of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The plant tastes somewhat like anise, with a strong, pungent, sweet smell. There are many varieties of basil. That which is used in Italian food is typically called sweet basil, as opposed to Thai basil, lemon basil and holy basil, which are used in Asia. While most common varieties of basil are treated as annuals, some are perennial in warm, tropical climates, including African Blue and Holy Thai basil. Basil is originally native to Iran, India and other tropical regions of Asia, having been cultivated there for more than 5,000 years.

Creating the tastes of Thailand is an irresistible challenge for cooks who love the pungent combinations and subtle balance of ingredients. True to Thai traditions, Lemongrass and Sweet Basil features recipes based on Royal Thai Cuisine, but the author has moved from the highly decorative and intricately carved presentation to a more easy-to-follow, modern approach. The key to successful Thai cooking is using the best and freshest produce that you can find, so the book starts by detailing the main ingredients that are essential to the Thai cook. This is followed by clear instructions on the cooking methods and techniques that are used to achieve the unique Thai flavors. Based on the traditional recipes of each Thai region, every cook has his or her own version of a dish including the addition of a secret ingredient or two. Kham shares with us over 50 of his recipes from Isan and Central, Southern, and Northern Thailand. Also included is a chapter of Thai tapas, Khap Klaem with mouthwatering dishes such as Fresh Oysters with Spicy Thai Sauce and Drunken Noodles. The stunning photographs accompanying the recipes give a strong sense of the Thai way of life. The beautiful location photography shows the seamless integration of food and the Thai Buddhist religion and the vibrant and informative food photographs reflect the Thai's liking for strong color and the importance of garnishes. Thai people have a passion for the best ingredients, a passion for eating, a passion for the experience of sharing good food. Be inspired by this and create a delicious meal for your family and friends.

Sweet Basil - There are many types of basil: linalool basil, exotic basil and sweet basil. The odor of the linalool type is very green, floral-sweet and is most often used in expensive perfumes. The exotic type of basil is stronger with a hint of camphor. Frontier's sweet basil type combines both qualities in a floral-spicy aroma with a lasting herbal sweetness. Clary sage, bergamot and lime oil work well with basil oil. Aromatherapy benefits: clarifying, uplifting, energizing, refreshing. Essential, absolute and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. The plants used to produce these oils are grown on certified organic fields and are third-party certified by Quality Assurance International; no synthetic chemicals are used in growing or processing them. Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. Essential oils and absolutes are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added.

Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. Starwest Essential Oils are guaranteed to be 100% pure and undiluted. The distillation process occurs either at the site where the plants are grown or at a distillery. Each oil is tested for purity and strength using the gas chromatography method. Sweet Basil - There are many types of basil: linalool basil, exotic basil and sweet basil. The odor of the linalool type is very green, floral-sweet and is most often used in expensive perfumes. The exotic type of basil is stronger with a hint of camphor. Trinity's sweet basil type combines both qualities in a floral-spicy aroma with a lasting herbal sweetness. Clary sage, bergamot and lime oil work well with basil oil. Aromatherapy benefits: clarifying, uplifting, energizing, refreshing. Although Basil usually stimulates, in excess it can have a stupefying effect. It should not be used during pregnancy or on children under 16 years. Basil can irritate a sensitive skin and must be avoided during pregnancy. Basil oil is a good tonic for the treatment of nervous disorders and stress related headaches, migraines and allergies. It has a beneficial action on the respiratory tract; it is often used for asthma, bronchitis and sinus infections. Basil is also effective in the case of constipation, nausea, vomiting and cramp, and also with menstrual problems. It helps to minimize uric acid in the blood, thus relieving gout. It refreshes the skin and helps control acne. Basil oil is a very beneficial oil and can be helpful not only for headaches and migraines, but also has an uplifting effect on depression. It is effective in digestive disorders, ranging from nausea to hiccups and for infections in the respiratory tract. It is useful for wasp and insect bites, particularly that of mosquitoes. In vapor therapy Basil oil can be used for migraines, headaches and concentration. Basil oil in a warm bath could help relieve gout and muscular as well menstrual pains. Basil oil goes particularly well with oils such as: Bergamot, Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Fennel, Ginger, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Neroli and Verbena. Essential and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. Packaged in glass amber bottles to preserve the oils, the 1/3 ounce size has a fitted dropper insert and a tamper-evident, child-proof lid. The larger items are in amber glass or PET gallon containers, depending on the product. This pianist knows how to probe the guts of the standard tunes, whether they`re oldies like "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Tea for Two" or more modern staples like "My Funny Valentine" and "All Blues." With the dependably virtuosic assistance of bassist Fran\u0007ois Moutin and drummer Ari Hoenig, Pilc puts his august creative signature on everything he plays, often guiding his colleagues toward torrential climaxes of harmonic and rhythmic discovery. Put simply, this is one of the most exciting trios working. And Pilc can write, too. The originals this time include the off-kilter Latin "262" (not to be confused with Coltrane`s "26-2"), the bracing set-closer "Together" (which includes an extended reference to Charlie Parker`s "The Hymn"), and a solo piano miniature called "My K\u0014ln Concert" (a nod to Keith Jarrett`s famous 1975 recording). Pilc`s fast treatment of "All Blues" presages what he would do later on his Welcome Home album with "So What," another masterpiece from Kind of Blue. ~ David R. Adler Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
