What’s the best way to set up real whiskey barrel planters?

I’m getting a couple real whiskey barrel half”s and wanted to set them on their sides and do the flowing effect. Can you tell me the best way to set this up?

Yes, Charles the best way is as follows:
Wood barrels need to be off the cement and dirt both:
The barrels need to have either small Pea Gravel or rock filler in the bottom of the,Barrels to help in drainage about 1 to 2″ thick. Then over the Rock or Pea Gravel Good Layer of Microgrow Planting Mix then install the Color Spot or other Plants of your choice for your Growing area Recommended by Sunset Garden Book for your Growing zone.
Then also put some vitamin B#1 Starter Liquid with your Water. Then water First when planting your Plants. Also if you have Drip Irrigation system place either a .05 or .01 emitter into the Barrel. These emitters are slow controlled water and good water management. The Drip Irrigation system can be used with either a Hose timer that is Battery operated on either small 9-Volt , or 2,4 #AA Battery controlled or regular Sprinkler system Drip systems. The type that can be hooked up to regular Hose Bibb fittings screws onto the hose and several are available at local Home Depot or Lowes Home inprovement centers or Nurserey Section for irrigation systems and Drip Systems low Water flow section.
The Whiskey Barrel or Oak Barrels are Great potted plants and Vegetable Plant Growers however keep in mind the water and Soil breaks it down and Dry Rot can get to it quick.
So, after you change the plants out clean out the Barrel clean includ the Rocks. This cuts down on Fungus and other Disease that gets into the soil causing Root Rot to the Plants. So, you need to clean-out the soil and Rocks at least after a growing season. Start the process over clean materials and even wash your Barrel down with a possible Bleach,Hot Water and good scrub brush inside the Barrel then even use a good sealler for wood. ***However let the Barrel dry out at least 24-48 hrs before you start the new planting over. The treatement may soak into the soil and damage the growth of the roots of the new plants.*** I have planted Clay Pots, Oak Barrels,Whiskey Barrells over my 35 yrs of Planting as a Landscape Contractor, around Pools,Spas,Flowerbeds and in former Nursery from Retail outlets I formally worked for over the years. The Managers and Instructors that I have had at College and jobs always stressed clean out your containers to prevent any fungus or transfer fungus from new plants, from old untreated materials that is not cleaned out from Diseases,Insects, Parsites that may stay behind from old plants and material left in containers.
