Perfectly Japanese
$21.97 Are Japanese families in crisis? In this dynamic and substantive study, Merry Isaacs White looks back at two key moments of family making in the past hundred years -- the Meiji era and postwar period -- to see how models for the Japanese family have been constructed. The models had little to do with families of their eras and even less to do with families today, she finds. She vividly portrays the everyday reality of a range of families: young married couples who experience fleeting togetherness until the first child is born; a family separated by job shifts; a family with a grandmother as babysitter; a marriage without children. |

Japanese Prisoners of War
$36.91 divDuring the Second World War the Japanese were stereotyped in the European and American imagination as fanatical, cruel and almost inhuman. This view is unhistorical and simplistic. It fails to recognise that the Japanese were acting at a time of supreme national crisis and it fails to take account of their own historical tradition. The essays in Japanese Prisoners of War, by both Western and Japanese scholars, explore the question from a balanced viewpoint, looking at it in the light of longer-term influences, notably the Japanese attempt to establish themselves as an honorary white race. The Japanese Sword
$28.98 The Japanese sword combines unbreakability, rigidity, and lethal cutting power, and it is in the resolution of these conflicting practical requirements that it emerges as a triumph of the forger's art. The mystique of the sword lingers on in our age of mechanized combat, but the aesthetic qualities for which swords are most valued by collectors today-the liveliness of the metal "skin," the confidence in every aspect of the design, the scrolling temper-line, the almost buoyant lightness of the hilt when the blade is held in the hand-all derive from what the Japanese sword demanded as a symbol of strength and as a weapon. As an instrument of clear persuasion, no other blade anywhere has ever been its equal. This volume, containing color and black-and-white plates, has been prepared as an introduction to the history and appreciation of the Japanese sword. Its author, until his death in 1978, was one of Japan's foremost sword experts, and his wide knowledge is here brought to bear on every aspect of sword lore, including forging techniques and problems of appraisal. Looking over the 1,500 years of sword history in Japan, Kanzan Sato notes how the major developments-the shift from the early straight blades to the tachi, which were longer curved blades slung edge downwards at the waist, to the familiar daisho pair of short and long swords worn by samurai until modern times-were the result of both technical innovation and changed fighting techniques. He examines the various fashions in sword mounts and the at times precious, highly decorated work of the smiths who specialized in sword guards, or tsuba, during the Momoyama and Edo periods. The centerpiece of this book, however, is a detailed examination of over a dozen of Japan's most revered blades, including the Kanehira and the Dojigiri by Yasutsuna, perhaps the two finest swords in Japan and as clear and beautiful today as when they were forged some 900 years ago. The discussion of what makes these blades special and how they have been passed down for generations offers the reader a wealth of insight into the sword in Japan as heirloom and cultural treasure. |

Japanese Industry in the American South
$4.98 In spite of Japanese investment in America and the debate on the competitive edge of Japanese enterprise, we know little about the actual people who are managing and working in Japanese plants. Japanese Industry in the American South describes the industrial cultures found in three Japanese industrial plants in the American South. Choong Soon Kim discusses why Japanese industries are coming to the South, to what extent Japanese industrial management in the South replicates the industrial relations model used in the home plants in Japan, and examines the reactions of Americans toward the Japanese expatriates. The Japanese have had a profound effect on Southerners. Meeting the challenges of the Japanese has led Americans to rediscover their own strengths and weaknesses. Japanese Industry in the American South offers a different perspective. Western scholars have emphasized the positive aspects of traditional values and practices for Japanese industry, and haveeven romanticized their effects. Utilizing his bicultural experience, Choong Soon Kim discusses how the American public tends to over-estimate Japanese knowledge about American culture and the Japanese ability to be competitive with their American counterparts. He also talks about the idea many Americans still have that Japanese industrialists are so knowledgeable about the South that they can exploit what are seen as southern characteristics: white, rural, polite and non-union--of people who are supposedly eager to work hard for low wages. Conversely, the numerous concessions, compromises, and accommodations required by the Japanese are exposed and analyzed here. Japanese Industry in the American South reveals a more balanced view of Japan's success as well as struggles to remain competitive in an American setting. |

Excerpt: CHAPTER III THE IMPERIAL FAMILY Mutsuhito, 1 Emperor of Japan, was the 121st of the Imperial line, which has reigned in unbroken succession throughout over twenty-five centuries. It is difficult to Sacred convey to the European mind an adequate Character of conception of the position which the Emperor Emperor. on the throne of Japan holds in the minds of his subjects or of the degree of reverential awe with which, in the present days of materialism, he continues to be invested, not only as the Vicegerent on earth of the gods in heaven, but as being, in virtue of his divine descent, a god incarnate who rules, guides and guards his people with the infallible wisdom and inexhaustible love that can only be possessed by one who has inherited the attributes of omnipotent and benevolent ancestors in heaven. We reverence our King and devout Roman Catholics implicitly accept the decrees of the Pope, but to the Japanese their Emperor is more than King and Pope combined. He is their heavenly father, present with them on earth to share in all their joys and sorrows, to whose guidance and support all they achieve is solely due. He rules over a Constitutional Empire with legislatures vested with very extensive powers, but his word and will are still law. Against neither has even a murmur of opposition ever been raised, and no matter what may be the political crisis, what the spirit or wishes of any section or of all the people, the Emperor has sti... |

Sakuteiki: Visions of the Japanese Garden
$22.79 Written by a Japanese court noble nearly 1000 years ago, Sakuteiki, or Records of Garden Making, is the oldest known treatise on the art of Japanese garden design. Composed during the Heian period, this work delves into the culture and customs of ancient Japanese society, offering insight into the Japanese view not only of gardening, but also of living life. At a time when even the art of setting stones was seen as a spiritually significant and aesthetically powerful act, Sakuteiki serves as a metaphor for the Japanese way of life, powerfully illuminating the overall culture of ancient Japan.Along with ample technical advice on how to build a garden (much of which is still adhered to by traditional Japanese gardeners today) Sakuteiki reveals four unique visions of Heian-period gardens.Authors Marc P. Keane and Jiro Takei offer a clear and succinct translation, and through extensive annotations and introductory chapters, provide the knowledge required to understand the secrets held within this ancient text. With extensive black and white illustrations, detailed commentary, and a complete glossary, Sakuteiki invites readers into the world of ancient Japanese garden design, exploring the role of religious tradition, nature, and the use of spirituality in the construction of a Japanese garden. This wonderful and ancient text is sure to entertain and enlighten gardeners, scholars, and historians well into the next millennium. |

Japanese Dishes for Wine Lovers
$5.48 A new book that explains how to pair wine with modern Japanese food. Much has been written about the pairing of food and wine but almost nothing that focuses on Japanese food. It could be because Japanese food is not commonly associated with wine but actually many of its flavors may be perfectly paired with red and white, dry and even sweet wines. Reflecting the increasing popularity of Japanese food in the West and the new interest in wine as an accompaniment to food in Japan, Japanese Dishes for Wine Lovers seeks to explain some simple ways to enjoy this non-traditional combination. Pairing wine goes beyond matching red wine with meat and white wine with chicken. The right match depends on personal tastes and adherence to some general guidelines intended to enhance the aromas of both the wine and the food and to prevent a clashing of flavors. In Japanese Dishes for Wine Lovers, leading wine expert John Whelehan explains the elements of typical Japanese flavorings-soy sauce, ginger, sake, mirin, and sesame-as well as some of the more delicate flavors like raw fish and exotic mushrooms, and describes the best wine selections for each. He also gives descriptive recommendations for the best wines to savor with the 58 contemporary Japanese dishes created and presented in this book by best-selling cookbook author Machiko Chiba. The dishes in this book are simple to make and represent the new wave of cookery in Japan today. Amond the 58 mouthwatering recipes are White Fish Simmered in Spicy Miso, Thin-Sliced Octopus with Citron-Flavored Sesame, Tuna Tataki with Wasabi, Beef with White Sesame and Sweet Sake, Grated Mountain Yam and Carrot, Daikon Radish Gyoza Dumplings, and Tiny Dried Fish and Pine Kernel Onigiri Rice Balls. Beautifully illustrated and packed with innovative recipes, Japanese Dishes for Wine Lovers fills a much needed place in our understanding of how to enjoy wine with today's dynamic Japanese inspired menus. |

Inside Japanese Ceramics
$13.9 This practical and supremely useful manual is the first comprehensive, hands-on introduction to Japanese ceramics. The Japanese ceramics tradition is without compare in its technical and stylistic diversity, its expressive content, and the level of appreciation it enjoys, both in Japan and around the world. Inside Japanese Ceramics focuses on tools, materials, and procedures, and how all of these have influenced the way traditional Japanese ceramics look and feel. A true primer, it concentrates on the basics: setting up a workshop, pot-forming techniques, decoration, glazes, and kilns and firing. It introduces the major methods and styles that are taught in most Japanese workshops, including several representative and well-known wares: Bizen, Mino, Karatsu, Hagi, and Kyoto. While presenting the time-tested techniques of the tradition, author Richard L. Wilson also accommodates modern technologies and materials as appropriate. Wilson has gathered a wealth of information on two fronts—as a researcher of Japanese pottery and art history, and as a potter who has studied and worked for years with master Japanese potters. In his introduction, he provides a short history of Japanese ceramics, and in closing he looks beyond traditional methods toward ways in which Western potters can make Japanese methods their own. Richly illustrated with 24 color plates, over 100 black-and-white photographs, and over 70 instructive line-drawings, Inside Japanese Ceramics is indispensable for potters as well as connoisseurs and collectors of Japanese ceramics. Traditional Japanese Arts And Culture
$28.98 Music, poetry, the visual arts, literature, and theater have played a vital part in Japanese society. But, although Japanese artists, musicians, actors, and authors have written much over the centuries about the creation, meaning, and appreciation of these various arts, most of these works are scattered among countless hard-to-find sources or make only a fleeting appearance in books devoted to other subjects. Compiled in this volume is a wealth of original material on Japanese arts and culture from the prehistoric era to the Meiji Restoration (1867). These carefully selected sources, including many translated here for the first time, are placed in their historical context and outfitted with brief commentaries, allowing the reader to make connections to larger concepts and values found in Japanese culture.Although the book focuses on the visual and literary arts, it contains material on topics not easily classified in Western categories, such as the martial and culinary arts, the art of tea, and flower arranging. More than 60 color and black and white illustrations enrich the collection and provide further insights into Japanese artistic and cultural values. Included as well are a bibliography of English-language and Japanese sources and an extensive list of suggested further readings.Traditional Japanese Arts and Culture offers an authentic look at the conceptual richness, diversity, and continuity of the Japanese cultural traditions. Rather than impose a thick layer of interpretation, this inspired and diverse collection allows the original writers and artists to speak directly to people in all areas of Japanese studies interested in what lies beneath the surface of Japanese arts and culture. |

Colorado's Japanese Americans
$19.48 Colorado's Japanese Americans is the first history of this significant minority in the Centennial State, penned by renowned journalist and author Bill Hosokawa. Hosokawa traces personal histories, such as Bob Sakata's journey from internment in a relocation camp to his founding of a prosperous truck farm; the conviction of three sisters for assisting the escape of German POWs; and the years of initiative and determination behind Toshihiro Kizaki's ownership of Sushi Den, a beloved Denver eatery. In addition to personal stories, the author also relates the larger history of the interweave of cultures in Colorado, from the founding of the Navy's Japanese language school at the University of Colorado to the merging of predominantly white and Japanese American congregations at Arvada's Simpson United Methodist Church. With the author's long view and sharp eye, Colorado's Japanese Americans creates a storied document about the legacy of the Issei and! Nisei in the Centennial State. Colorado's Japanese Americans is the first edition in the new Timberline Series from the University Press of Colorado, and is the co-winner of the 2005 Colorado Endowment for the Humanities Publication Prize. |

The Spectacle of Japanese American Trauma
$33.98 In The Spectacle of Japanese American Trauma, Emily Roxworthy contests the notion that the U.S. government's internment policies during World War II had little impact on the postwar lives of most Japanese Americans. After the curtain was lowered on the war following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many Americans behaved as if the "theatre of war" had ended and life could return to normal. Roxworthy demonstrates that this theatrical logic of segregating the real from the staged, the authentic experience from the political display, grew out of the manner in which internment was agitated for and instituted by the U.S. government and media. During the war, Japanese Americans struggled to define themselves within the web of this theatrical logic, and they continue to reenact this trauma in public and private to this day. The political spectacles staged by the FBI and the American mass media were heir to a theatricalizing discourse that can be traced back to Commodore Matthew Perry's "opening" of Japan in 1853. Westerners, particularly Americans, drew upon it to orientalize--disempower, demonize, and conquer--those of Japanese descent, who were characterized as natural-born actors who could not be trusted. Roxworthy provides the first detailed reconstruction of the FBI's raids on Japanese American communities, which relied on this discourse to justify their highly choreographed searches, seizures, and arrests. Her book also makes clear how wartime newspapers (particularly those of the notoriously anti-Asian Hearst Press) melodramatically framed the evacuation and internment so as to discourage white Americans from sympathizing with their former neighbors of Japanese descent. Roxworthy juxtaposes her analysis of these political spectacles with the first inclusive look at cultural performances staged by issei and nisei (first- and second-generation Japanese Americans) at two of the most prominent "relocation centers": California's Manzanar and Tule Lake. The camp performances enlarge our understanding of the impulse to create art under oppressive conditions. Taken together, wartime political spectacles and the performative attempts at resistance by internees demonstrate the logic of racial performativity that underwrites American national identity. The Spectacle of Japanese American Trauma details the complex formula by which racial performativity proved to be a force for both oppression and resistance during World War II. |

Aging Among Japanese American Immigrants
$83.64 Aging is inevitable. Every individual experiences life's pathos of diminishing strength, flexibility, beauty, roles, relationships, and memory. On the other hand, aging is a group experience that differs from culture to culture. Especially in multicultural societies like the United States, aging differs from one ethnic group to another. The Japanese American elderly, who are perceived as a model minority, are no exception to this differentiation. Aging among Japanese American Immigrants explores the ethnic dimensions of aging among Japanese immigrants in the United States. Due to the successful assimilation of Japanese (Issei) and Japanese Americans (Nisei and Sansei) into American society, they have not been perceived as a discrete age group that needs social support or special health care. Their aging experience, however, is essentially dissimilar to that of white ethnic elderly. Most of the Issei and Nisei are now old men and women who relish Japanese ethnic food and croon Japanese songs in Japanese. It is apparent that the elderly are forced to re-synthesize themselves and transform their social and cultural involvement based on their ethnicity. The ethnographic research explores the ethnic dimensions of aging among Japanese and Japanese-American elderly in the United States, and illustrates their acculturative aging process and the parallel diminishment of culture-deculturative process. |

The children of Israel, including the tribe of Manasseh (U. S. A.), were instructed in many things by the prophet Jeremiah who, according to Jeremiah 1:10, Ferrar Fenton's version, says: See! I have appointed you to-day over nations, and kingdoms; to pull up, and to break down, and to destroy, and to erase; as well as to build, and to plant. Jeremiah was born 675 B. C., so he witnessed the pulling up, breaking down, and erasing of the kingdom of Judah, the killing of the king's son, and taking prisoners of the remnant of the nation. About 581 B. C. Jeremiah started on the latter part of his divine commission of building and planting. Accompanied by the royal seed, Zedekiah's daughter, Tamar Tephi, and Baruch, his scribe, he started for Ireland. Ten different Irish histories record the fact that at this time a wonderful prophet arrived in Ireland who caused Baal worship to cease, married his ward (Zedekiah's daughter) to the then ruling king of Ireland, who also was of the seed of David through the Zarah branch, on condition that the king should found a school for prophets. This was built at Tara and for five hundred years the educated men of Europe came to Ireland to absorb wisdom and learning from this school founded by Jeremiah, and to-day in the Court of Justice in Dublin, in the position of honor, is the medallion of Jeremiah cut in enduring stone as a waymark of his former presence there.
