Artistic Rain

What is a Rain Chain?
Rain chains are a fashionable, functional and affordable home product that adds aesthetic charm to any home.
In Japan, the practice of capturing rain for use in the household has been going on for centuries. It was back then and still today quite common for the roof of a house or business to incorporate a series of downspouts made from wood or ceramic, culminating into a large barrel or bucket. Artistic flair in conjunction with stimulating the senses of watching and listening to flowing water was incorporated into the process. The world was introduced to rain chains. No rainwater wasted!
Today in Japan, people are very much in touch with nature and live in harmony in all weather conditions. Rather than avoid the rain or just tolerate it, they embrace it and see the good that it offers. In North America, for many years rainy days were an inconvenience, and a day to be avoided. No more! People throughout America and the rest of the world are more aware than ever of the importance of rain. Especially, with water being our most precious natural resource.
The way rain chains work is quite simple. The majority of homes today have rain gutters, and at the end of the gutter is a downspout. Rainwater hits the roof and flows into a slightly downward sloped horizontal gutter. Gravity continues to pull the water through the gutter seeking an outlet more commonly known as a downspout. The flow of the water shifts from horizontal to vertical at the downspout. Instead of an enclosed downspout, the rain chain is a series of copper cups or links vertically connected. At this point the water cascades down the rain chain directing water into a bucket, basin or into the ground. The affects of the cascading water is soothing and visually captivating.
Today, in lieu of wood or ceramic 100% copper is the most commonly used material for rain chains. Copper is a natural element and 100% copper rain chains are eco-friendly. Wood and ceramic wear out over time exposed to the elements while natural copper withstands the forces of Mother Nature. The Statue of Liberty is all copper and still stands tall and beautiful after 120 years.
If you live in an area that experiences freezing temperatures, you’re in for a real treat. During sunny days, the copper rain chain will warm up and melt any snow or ice accumulation. At night it refreezes, leaving attractive and unique ice formations in the morning. Each one is unique, so you will want to have your camera ready to take some amazing photographs!
You will find that the other big attraction to rain chains is the effect they have on your ears. The sound of water, whether it’s the ocean or a small rippling stream, is very soothing. Imagine a warm summer rain on a Saturday afternoon, and you’re sitting near an open window or out on your covered porch. All is silent, except for the sound of rainwater cascading its way down the rain chain.
Rain chains that are produced from the highest quality 100% pure copper will last lifetimes. There are copper plated versions which in due time will fade and rust. Rain chains will add to the beauty and charm of your home for many years to come. Family, friends and neighbors will enjoy watching and listening to your rain chain during those rainy days that we have learned to appreciate. Please visit our website for a full collection of Rain Chains.

Casablanca [HD DVD]
$12.00 A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Waiting For Rain
$39.95 When droughts hit northeastern Brazil, thousands of rural workers are forced to abandon their homes for the cities in search of work. The double impact of drought and corruption--with politicians taking advantage of drought to buy votes and pilfer government accounts--contributes to an endless cycle of human suffering. In order to understand the impact of drought and the phenomenon of drought politics, Nicholas Arons goes beyond traditional social-science scholarship to sources such as novels, poetry, popular art, and oral history. For many people in the region, these artistic renditions of life are, ironically, a better reflection of reality than political rhetoric, government archives, and newspaper accounts--even though they are infused with myth or hyperbole. Drawing on interviews with artists and poets and on his own experiences in the Brazilian Northeast. Arons has written a poignant account of how drought has impacted the region's culture. He intertwines ecological, social, and political issues with the words of some of Brazil's most prominent authors and folk poets to show how themes surrounding drought--hunger, migration, endurance, nostalgia for the land--have become deeply embedded in Nordeste identity. Through this tapestry of sources. Arons shows that what is often thought of as a natural phenomenon is actually the result of centuries of social inequality, political corruption, and unsustainable land use. Waiting for Rain dramatically depicts a region still suffering from austere social and political realities, where drought--even during rainy seasons--is ubiquitous in the hearts and minds of its residents. A book of hope and resistance, myth and reality, and suffering andsalvation, it is also a personal narrative of self-discovery, tracing a young man's struggle to understand how human tragedy on a grand scale can exist alongside natural beauty. |

Sun, Wind, and Rain (Hardcover)
$75.63 Born in Birmingham, England, in 1783, David Cox was destined to become a major figure in the linked worlds of landscape painting and watercolor painting in the first half of the nineteenth century. Remarkably, no significant study of the artist has been undertaken in more than a century. This beautifully illustrated volume focuses much-needed attention on Cox, filling in the details of his biography and illuminating his contributions to British landscape painting. Cox`s widely-known Sun, Wind, and Rain, painted in 1845, is emblematic of his concern with the representation of light and atmosphere and weather. He was unparalleled in his ability to capture the effects of wind and weather. Scott Wilcox’s chapter in this book investigates Cox’s artistic identity and his legacy. Other chapters address such topics as Birmingham’s cultural milieu; myths about Cox’s life; the papers he chose; his painting in oils; and the fakes, forgeries, and misattributions that have challenged attempts to identify his oeuvre with certainty. |
